TINTYPES

In late 2019 I began researching the possibility of doing tintypes using the original techniques developed in the 1850s. Having long been a collector of antique photographs, I’ve tried to emulate their look in some of my design and illustration work. It has taken me years to acquire the necessary antique gear and the right people to help me with the techniques. The ongoing assistance and guidance of Anton Orlov and Eric Baillies make this new exploration possible. Without them I would be lost. This body of work is coming along slowly, but I am excited by it’s possibilities. In 2024, my darkroom was completed and I became a graduate of John Coffer’s Camp Tintype in Dundee, New York. Mr. Coffer’s teaching and techniques gave me the confidence to move forward on my own.

My cameras are an 8x10 Korona View, by the Seebold Invisible Camera Co., Rochester, NY, circa 1920s, and a Century No. 2, circa 1903. I have several antique lenses, including a Dallmeyer 3A, London, ENG, 1900-01, a Darlot barrel lens, Paris, FR, circa 1860, a Bausch and Lomb Optical Zeiss Plantar Series 1A, Rochester, NY, 1918, and a Voightlander No.6 Heliar, Germany, 1902.
