Paul Nitsche graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992. In addition to his artwork, he is slowly remodeling a 1895 church that serves as home and studio. Paul and his wife, Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist Rebecca Lamson Nitsche, currently reside in the rural Driftless Region of southwest Wisconsin.
Paul is known for his illustration and design, including artwork for the bands Dazzling Killmen, Oneiroid Psychosis, and Andrew Bird, book covers for William Gay and the biography of Keith Dowman, and the branding and bottle illustration and design for Awildan Distilling.
His sculptures of bronze, wood, and human bone reference anatomical exploration and reliquary. Paul’s recent tintypes are a reaction to political, societal, and physical anxieties, and memento mori.
From 2012 to 2022, Paul was involved with editing and proofing Southern author William Gay's posthumous literary archive published by Dzanc Books, Anomolaic Press, and The University of West Alabama’s Livingston Press.
Studio photographs of finished work are by Bill Lemke and Ron Lutz II.
